What is PRAYER?Praising God Prayer is praising God for who He is. Giving praise to God helps us to understand just how awesome He really is! We should praise Him for He is all-powerful, almighty, sovereign, good, loving, etc… We should praise Him for how giving He is. We should praise Him for how loving He is. Thanking God Prayer is thanksgiving. We should thank Him for all that He has done, for all He is doing and will do for us as His children. Seeking God Prayer is seeking God. Our primary purpose for prayer should be seeking God—seeking to know him better; to have a closer, more personal relationship with him; to communicate with him as a child would with his/her father; and bringing our needs and our desires before him. We are promised that if we seek God, we will find Him:
"So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer." - Ezra 8:23 Repentance from Sin Another part of getting closer to God is being totally open and honest with Him. We do this by repenting—confessing our sins and turning from them. Search your life and identify your sin. Then confess your sin to God and ask His forgiveness. Then turn from your sin and seek God, following His commandments. When our hearts and minds are clean and free from sin, there is no longer a barrier between us, and God. We are free to have a close relationship with Him. We are commanded to repent from our sin: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives." —I John 1:8-10 Asking God God wants us to come to him with our needs and desires. He tells us that if we would only ask and have faith, we would receive. "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened." —Matthew 7:7–8 "Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." —James 5:13–18 "The Lord has heard my cry for mercy, the Lord accepts my prayer." - Psalm 6:9 Praying for Others Christ prays for his disciples—for God’s protection over them from the evil one as they went out into the world to spread the Word, for those who would hear their message and come to believe that God had sent his son to save the world. Christ prayed for others and so should we. We are commanded to pray for others: "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should" —Colossians 4:2-4. "For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus through out all generations, for ever and ever! Amen" —Ephesians 3:14-21. Being Alone with God We need to make the effort to be alone with God. David often cried out to God from his room. Jesus often went off alone to spend time with God. We need to separate ourselves from the distractions of this world to be able to focus our attention on God and to be able to hear him speaking to us. "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." —Mark 1:35 "Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray." —Matthew 14:22–23 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." —Matthew 6:5–8 And when there are no words: "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will." —Romans 8:24 The Prayer Ministry Team is all about Prayer. Please join us for any or all of the following prayer activities: Church Monthly Prayer Meeting ON every first Tuesday of the month at 8pm at MPH. For many of the reasons above, come and join us in a time of prayer. We need to pray for our nation, the church including our pastors, leaders, organizations, committees, each other, and the many activities and individual needs of the church. Upper Room Prayer ON every Sunday at Level 1, Menara Wesley. You can pray by yourself quietly or with your fellow members or call a few friends to pray together with you. The room is available 24/7 for prayer. Prayer Shield takes place every Sunday during church services. We would like you to join us in prayer to cover the time worship is on, praying for our pastors, speakers, worship enablers, congregation, visitors, and everything focused on the church services. Nehemiah Watch is our prayer vigil that happens twice a month on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays starting from Tuesday at 7pm to Wednesday 7pm. You can pray wherever you are whether in church, at home, or workplace, etc. We are greatly encouraged and thankful that many of you have signed up and are committed to your time slots. For those who would like to participate in this vigil, please sign-up at the church office for 15-minute, 30-minute, 45-minute or 60-minute time slots. You can sign-up as a group of friends or colleagues, as a family, as a small group, or as an individual. A list of updated prayer items is available for all vigil participants. We welcome prayer items. There are prayer request forms available at the pew seats. Do fill them and drop them at the church office or offering bags or in the prayer box at the back of the sanctuary. Please feel free to call anyone of the Prayer Ministry Team members if you have questions or need prayer. We pray our church will become a praying church. What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? Deuteronomy 4:7 What can we say? Truly God is near us whenever we pray to him. So come! And together, let us Praise, Thank, Seek, Ask, Repent, and Pray for others because He is not like other gods.
