Overview
KLWMC’s Senior Sunday School, or affectionately called SSS, is the natural next progression or transition stage of a kid from the Junior Sunday School section. SSS is a ministry within the church that currently caters for children undergoing their secondary education, ie. Form 1 till Form 5. The entire setting in SSS is distinctively vibrant, exciting and thus it is no wonder that this ministry evidently sustained by our dynamic vision that SSS exists for the YOUTH: To be Youthful in worship, Outgoing in evangelism, United in fellowship, Trained in discipleship and Honouring God in ministry
SSS functions very much like a church service catered for youths every Sunday, with the 4Ws (Welcome, Worship, Word, Works) being incorporated in our sessions. In SSS, students are encouraged and also get the chance to serve in various ministries within SSS, like ushers, greeters, AV support, worship leader, musician, etc.
A typical SSS session will kick-off at 10.00am in the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) with the praise and worship session. This would be followed by some announcements and a congregational prayer before the students are split up for the Word portion. Students in Form 1-3 will remain in MPH for their lessons while the Form 4-5 students will adjourn to a room in Level 1, Menara Wesley for their lesson. For the lessons, SSS students have been divided into small groups, with one teacher being assigned to one group. Upon the conclusion of the central teaching, the teachers will facilitate discussions within their respective small groups. This methodology has been proven to be effective and is also in-line with the church’s drive for small group ministry. The SSS will end around 11.30am.
With this ideal time slots of SSS, most church-going parents would find it convenient to send their children to SSS as they join in the 10.00am church service, which usually concludes about the same time as SSS.
The SSS is currently made up of 12 dedicated teachers who love the Lord and the youths of our church. We are also blessed with various helpers (MYFers, ex-Form 5 leavers, etc.) who can easily connect with the SSS students and also help them in the transition to the next natural phase, ie. MYF.
In parallel with our church’s theme for the year of Abiding in Christ, the SSS theme for 2007 is aptly called “
Connected Youths, Connecting Christ”
SSS Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I join or register my child in SSS?
Bring yourself or your children to the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH), Menara Wesley at 10.00am any Sunday. Look for any of the teachers present or introduce yourself as a newcomer. We will know how to register you/your children. Alternatively, contact the Church School Superintendent for further details. (Contact info is found in FAQ No. 11)
- What is the current syllabus used in SSS?
Form 1-3 students is currently using the 3-volumed Young Teens Aflame textbook curriculum while the Form 4-5 operates on a 2-year syllabus. For the 1st year, we will be following the Membership and Baptism Class following the church's Foundations Book and for the 2nd year, we will be covering lessons related to life application issues that are relevant to the youths and spiritual grounding to prepare them for the challenges of the world.
- Why are the Form 1 - 3 and Form 4 - 5 students split up for their lessons?
Over the years, we have found this to be more effective in getting the students to open up during sharing and also because of the different levels of maturity between the older and younger youth.
- How much do I need to pay to register into SSS?
It's FREE! No registration fee required.
- As a parent, can I sit in and observe a class in session?
Certainly. However, you are advised to inform the Church School Superintendent when you plan to do this.
- I'm interested in serving in the SSS as a teacher or helper. How can I go about doing that?
Fantastic! Quickly get in touch with the Church School Superintendent to inform of your interest. The pastoral team and other relevant committees will then reconsider your interest to serve in the SSS ministry and respond to you accordingly.
- What does a SSS student need to bring to SSS?
Bare essentials include a Bible and some pen or pencils. Of course not forgetting a cheerful attitude and attentive mind.
- As a parent, I like to discuss with my children about what they have learnt in SSS. Are the topics to be covered in SSS made available?
Yes, we will distribute the yearly SSS class schedules and topics of lessons to be covered to the students at the beginning of the year. This will also include a list of key events in the SSS calendar for the year. If you do not yet have a copy, simply contact any of the teachers in FAQ No. 11 and we will furnish you with one
- What is this Lighthouse 360 (LH 360) event that takes place on every first Sunday of the month?
This event was introduced somewhere during the 4th Quarter of 2006. Basically, it is an extended praise and worship session, followed by some games to foster better fellowship amongst the SSS students. Upon conclusion of LH 360, the students are encouraged to attend the Praise & Worship service in the main sanctuary. Indirectly, this event aims to encourage and assist in the transition of SSS students into mainstream church service.
- Isn't the first Sunday of the month supposed to be designated for the children to follow their parents to attend normal church services?
How true. That is why we want to stress here that LH 360 is NOT a compulsory event for all SSS to attend. If you are a parent and have been bringing your children into the main sanctuary for normal church services on Family Worship Sundays, please continue doing so. Of course, you are also most welcomed to encourage your children to attend LH 360 (which only happens once a month) and then join them after that in the Praise & Worship service
